Whether you’re visiting for a weekend climbing trip or a longer outdoor escape, Il Niro Terazza is your ideal climbing base on the Ligurian coast.

Below are some of my favourite crags and spots - check it out!

Why Finale Ligure Is One of Europe’s Best Climbing Destinations

If you love sport climbing, Finale Ligure is one of those places you keep coming back to.

The combination of beautiful limestone cliffs, Mediterranean views, and thousands of routes makes the region one of the most famous climbing areas in Europe. You can climb technical slabs, vertical pocket walls, or huge overhanging caves — often with the sea visible in the background.

What we personally love most is the variety: you can spend a week here and climb somewhere completely different every day.

And if you stay longer, the nearby Val Pennavaire valley offers even more spectacular limestone and a quieter atmosphere.

Beginner Climbing in Finale Ligure

Starting outdoor climbing in Finale is surprisingly easy thanks to the huge number of well-bolted moderate routes.

Tre Porcellini

Best for: Beginners

Grades: 3 – 5

Season: Spring, Fall, Winter

Tre Porcellini (the “Three Little Pigs”) is one of the classic beginner crags in Finale Ligure.

The routes are mostly on friendly slabs and vertical walls, perfect for learning footwork on Finale limestone. The base is relatively comfortable and sunny, making it a pleasant place to spend a relaxed climbing day.

If it’s your first outdoor climbing trip, this is a great place to start.

Monte Cucco

Best for: Beginners to advanced climbers

Grades: 4 – 8

Season: Spring, Fall, Winter

https://www.thecrag.com/en/cli...

Monte Cucco is one of the most famous climbing cliffs in Finale Ligure and offers something for almost every climber.

You’ll find

  • beginner-friendly slabs
  • beautiful vertical pocket climbing
  • harder endurance routes

Some sectors are slightly overhanging and stay dry even during light rain, which makes Monte Cucco a good option when the weather isn’t perfect.

Family-Friendly Crags in Finale

If you’re climbing with kids, comfort and easy access become very important.

These crags work particularly well for families.

Cava di Rio Fine

Best for: Families and beginners

Grades: 3 – 5

Season: Spring, Fall, Winter

Cava di Rio Fine is often recommended as one of the most family-friendly climbing spots in Finale.

The reasons are simple:

  • very short approach
  • easy routes
  • open base area

It’s a great place for kids to try climbing outdoors while adults enjoy some relaxed routes.

Iconic Climbing in Finale Ligure

Some crags are simply must-visit locations because of their history, atmosphere, or spectacular climbing.

Grotta dell’Edera

Best for: Mid-level climbers and stronger

Grades: 6a – 8b

Season: Spring, Fall, Winter

Grotta dell’Edera is probably the most iconic crag in Finale Ligure.

The huge cave is famous for:

  • spectacular stalactites
  • steep endurance climbing
  • world-class routes

Even if you don’t climb here, it’s worth visiting just to watch climbers battling through the steep tufas.

It’s also a great winter crag because the cave stays dry and sheltered.

Best Crags for Mid-Level Climbers

If you climb around 6a–7b, Finale Ligure is basically paradise.

Rocca di Corno

Best for: Technical limestone climbing

Grades: 5c – 7c

Season: Spring, Fall, Winter

Rocca di Corno is one of the historic climbing walls of Finale.

Expect:

  • technical slab climbing
  • vertical walls with pockets
  • amazing views over the hills

Routes here often require precise footwork rather than brute strength, which is typical for Finale limestone.

Rian Cornei

Best for: Variety and multiple sectors

Grades: 5c – 8a

Season: Spring and Fall

Rian Cornei is not just one crag but a whole network of sectors

You can easily spend several days exploring:

  • different walls
  • different exposures
  • completely different styles

This is one of the best places to climb if your group has mixed abilities.

Climbing in Val Pennavaire

About 20 minutes from our apartment, Val Pennavaire offers another world-class climbing area.

The valley is quieter, wilder, and famous for its steep limestone caves and long endurance routes.

Many climbers, like myself :), combine Finale Ligure and Val Pennavaire in the same trip, which gives you an incredible range of climbing styles.

Terminal

Best for: Mid-level climbers

Grades: 5b – 8a

Season: Spring and Fall

Terminal is one of the most popular crags in the valley.

The wall is steep and impressive, but the climbing remains surprisingly accessible with many routes in the 6th and 7th grade.

What to Do When It Rains

Even in sunny Liguria, rain can happen.

Luckily, there are still options.

Some sectors remain dry thanks to huge overhangs.

Good options include:

  • Grotta dell’Edera
  • Basura cave sectors
  • parts of Monte Cucco

These caves often allow climbing even during light rain.

Get your gear

In Finalborgo, you find everything you need for your outdoor adventure. The town offers various shops with almost every outdoor brand and equipment for every project. All of them offer good service and know-how.

Still, my favourite shop is https://www.mountain-shop.com/...

One of the staff members, Marco (Thomas) Tomassini, wrote some of the standard climbing books for Finale Ligure.

Final Tips for Climbing in Finale

Typical gear for sport climbing here:

  • 70–80 m rope
  • 14–16 quickdraws
  • helmet recommended

Finale limestone is famous for its pockets, tufas, and technical footwork, so bring good shoes and expect a lot of interesting movement.

If you’re visiting the area for climbing, you’ll quickly understand why Finale Ligure is considered one of the best sport climbing destinations in Europe.

And the best part: even after years of climbing here, there are still hundreds of crags left to explore.
